Choral Competitions

Overview

Students sing a song on stage as a solo or in a group.

Number of Entries

One (1) entry per school in either or both of the two (2) competition categories (see below).

Time Limit

Minimum of 1 minute, maximum of 5 minutes.  Subject to under/over-time penalty.

Judging

Based upon pronunciation, clarity & enunciation, intonation, preparation, and musicality. (Click here to view the Choral Competition Judging Sheet .)

Competition Categories

Schools may make one (1) entry in each of the two (2) following categories:

– Solo / Duet  (A solo is one singer, or one main singer with some other voices participating minimally, such as on a refrain.  A duet is two singers participating equally — effectively, a double solo.)

– Group  (Three or more singers participating nearly equally.)

Accompaniment

Each school provides its own accompaniment either in the form of a recorded track to be played through the Ballroom’s sound system or one’s own sound equipment (e.g. “boombox”), or actual live musical instruments (guitar, keyboard, etc.) which it has brought to Convention.  Any accompaniment track to be played through the Ballroom’s sound system must be emailed to sctech@ua.edu on or immediately prior to Convention Day.  Track must be clearly labeled and in a standard format for play-back by the technician operating the audio equipment.

*Note: Since this is not a “sing along”, no vocals should be audible on any accompaniment track.

Selections

Any style of music is permitted. Selection title must be stated upon registering for the competition.

Memorization

Required for group only.

Other equipment

Microphones and chairs will be available.
