Overview
Student reads a passage aloud for judging live at Convention. (Formerly called “Individual Oral Competition”.)
Number of Entries
5 entries per school per level.
Judging
Based upon the quality of spoken French. The presentation may be dramatized with costumes or props, but such enhancements will not be scored. (Click here to view the Presentational Speaking Competition Judging Sheet.)
Time Limits
There are no time limits, since the same passage will be read by all participants and the entire passage must be read.
Memorization
Memorization is neither required nor expected. Keep in mind, however, that “Preparation” is a judging category for this competition.
Passages & Procedures
All participants in the same level will present the same, pre-selected passage live at Convention. Click on the appropriate level to see, print, and practice the passage to be presented.
Level 1 Selection
Level 2 Selection
Level 3 Selection
Advanced Level Selection
Participants will present their selection for judging before a small, live audience. The intent of this competition is to give participants an opportunity to know a piece well and present it with a level of confidence which could only result from intentional preparation. That said, students may still ‘walk in’ and present the passage with little-to-no prior preparation. Costumes and props are permitted but not scored.
Eligibility
Student must be a non-native speaker of French. Good judgment should be used in determining if a student is a native speaker or not. Students compete at the level of French in which they are currently enrolled or at a higher level, but not at a lower level. If a student has joined his/her French Club, but is not currently taking French, he/she may compete at the next highest level of competition. For example, a student who has completed two years of French may wish to compete at Level 3. If there is any question about how a student should be classified, please contact the President Club sponsor before submitting your entry.
